Vice President JD Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, has been placed under review by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). The department runs 161 schools for military families and civilian workers.
The 2016 bestseller is one of over a dozen books reportedly pulled from the shelves for review of its compliance with White House orders that prohibit the Armed Forces from promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The concepts cover race, sex, and gender ideology.

PEN America first reported the review. If the book is found to be in violation, reading it would require parental permission for students to read. The book could also be segregated in libraries.
The DoDEA also has halted celebrations of heritage months like Black History Month or allowing trans students to play on sports teams or use bathrooms that align with their gender identity.
