Travel Media Star Rick Steves Shares Cancer Diagnosis

Rick Steves, who opened up the hidden charms of travel via his PBS television shows, books, and excursions, said Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Steves, 69, announced his diagnosis and shared on social media his prognosis for coming months.the

Steves said his doctor told him that “if you’re going to get cancer, this is a good kind to get,” and scans have shown so far there is no sign of it having spread. Steves did not share what stage he is in.

However, Steves said his doctor has cleared him to film two new TV shows in France over the next three weeks.

After that, he will return to his Edmonds, Washington home for surgery.

“I’ll likely get my surgery in late September, be laid up for a month, and—God willing—be cancer-free and back at it by the end of October,” Steves said.
